Weekends in the City can be a blast, exhausting and brutal, all at the same time. Although I tend to stay low key on Friday nights (this past weekend being an exception) because of long runs early Saturday morning, there is still plenty of time to do some damage.  Saturday brunch leads to Sunday hangovers. Sunday hangovers lead to Sunday “hair of the dog” drinking. “Hair of the dog” drinking turns into late night bedtimes and Monday morning headaches/stomach pangs.

This doesn’t include the amount of awful quality and late night food consumed. Sometimes, on Monday morning all I want is a bacon, egg and cheese on a whole wheat everything bagel from the place around the corner and an extra large iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts before going into work.  However, I’ve learned that this is actually counter productive to the recovery process **le sigh**.

Instead, I make a detox smoothie (recipe below) in my Ninja Blender with the thoughts of bacon dancing in my head. When recovering from a rough weekend, it’s important (and rather difficult) to not continue the bad behavior while sober. As much as you want that pizza or buffalo chicken sandwich, try to think of the healthier options.   This smoothie is great. It cleanses, tastes so good and is actually pretty filling!  I do a variation of this at night as well. Keeping frozen fruit stocked in your freezer ensures that you’re always prepared on Monday morning, so there’s no excuses!  Many of the grocery stores around me have very expensive bags of frozen fruit (up to $6.00 per bag).  I try to find sales on fresh fruit and then freeze that myself or trek to Trader Joes which actually has pretty inexpensive bags (if you can handle the massive lines).

If you’re going to opt into playing hard on weekends, or even just one weekend, you need to be sure to take the proper measures and do everything you can to help your body recover properly, especially if you have a run that night.  I’ll also drink coconut water, watered down Gatorade or Nuun electrolyte tablets  throughout the day to make sure I’m re-hydrating and get a salad for lunch.  It’s not easy to stick to this strict Morning/Evening smoothie,  but just remember what an amazing weekend you had and tell yourself it’s all worth it!  Don’t let a long run on Saturdays or Mondays interrupt your weekend plans 🙂

Green Smoothie Detox Recipe – Morning

  • 1 Cup Water (I tend to use Coconut Water for better flavor)
  • 1 TBSP Flax Seed
  • 1 Cup Raspberries
  • 1 Banana
  • 1/4 Cup Spinach
  • 1 TBSP Almond Butter
  • 2 TSP. Lemon Juice

Evening Smoothie 

  • 1/2 Cup Mango
  • 1 Cup Blueberries
  • 1 1/2 Cup Coconut Water
  • 1 Cup Kale (or Spinach)
  • 1 TBSP Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1 TBSP Flax Seeds
  • Dash or 2 of Cayenne Pepper
